Selecting the right region for your software project is crucial and often a challenging decision. It's common for these choices to be made without much thought, yet they can significantly impact latency and service reliability. Making a change later can be complex, so it's best to get it right from the start to avoid complications later.

This guide explains how DigitalOcean's global infrastructure is structured, what services are available in each region, how to select a suitable region, and the challenges associated with changing regions later. While much of this information is available in DigitalOcean's documentation, this guide aims to consolidate and clarify it for 2026.

  • Choosing a region is a fundamental architectural choice. VPCs are specific to regions, and live transfers between regions are not possible. Some resources, such as load balancers and Kubernetes clusters, cannot be transferred between regions.
  • Product availability varies by datacenter. While core services are available across all datacenters, newer AI datacenters may have limited offerings. Always verify availability before making a commitment.
  • Consider latency for end users, data residency requirements, product availability, and pricing when selecting a region.

Understanding Regions and Datacenters

First, it's important to define what a 'region' means. In some contexts, it refers to a metropolitan area containing multiple datacenters (like NY or SFO), while in others, such as the DigitalOcean API, it denotes a specific datacenter (e.g., nyc1). Each datacenter operates independently within these metropolitan areas unless connected via user-managed VPC peering.

Some regions, such as ams2 and sfo1, are older facilities that predate DigitalOcean's current infrastructure. They continue to support existing customers but are not recommended for new resources.

As of July 2026, DigitalOcean operates 15 datacenters across 12 cities worldwide, including North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Recent expansions have added AI/GPU capabilities in cities like Atlanta, Richmond, and Kansas City.

Not all products are available in every datacenter. Core offerings like Droplets, DigitalOcean Kubernetes (DOKS), Block Storage, and VPC are available in all datacenters, but some products, like managed Kafka and OpenSearch, may not be in the newest AI datacenters. GPU worker nodes are limited to select datacenters, and certain services like Spaces Cold Storage are not available in specific locations. If you require a combination of services in one geographic area, verify the availability in each datacenter.

Selecting a Suitable Region

When determining a region/datacenter, utilize the PALM (Proximity, Availability, Legal, Money) framework. 'Proximity' refers to the distance of the region from your end users, as closer proximity can reduce latency and enhance perceived service performance. It's advisable to test this by deploying a small Droplet in each potential datacenter and measuring the round-trip time from user locations. Generally, keep your primary datacenter on the same continent as your main user base. For static assets, using Spaces with a built-in CDN can help cache content closer to users, regardless of the compute region. For globally distributed traffic, consider employing multiple regions behind a Global Load Balancer.

'Availability' pertains to the products accessible at that datacenter. Whenever DigitalOcean launches a new product or service, ensure it is available in your chosen datacenter.

'Legal' involves data residency and compliance requirements, such as GDPR for EU datacenters, which mandate that uploaded data remains within the selected region. 'Money' refers to pricing, which can vary by service and may not always be a decisive factor.

AI and GPU Infrastructure by Region

DigitalOcean's latest offerings are optimized for AI. While GPU capacity is expanding rapidly, GPUs are still only available in certain datacenters, limiting your regional options if you require them. As of July 2026, the current options are outlined below, with billing occurring per second and a minimum of five minutes.

For training large models, high-memory 8x nodes are ideal in datacenters like nyc2, sfo3, ams3, tor1, ric1, or atl1. For cost-effective inference or lighter workloads, consider single-GPUs, such as the NVIDIA L40S or RTX 6000 Ada options in tor1. Bare metal GPUs, available in nyc3, ams3, and atl1, are dedicated eight-GPU servers and operate separately from GPU Droplets.

Changing Regions in the Future

Choosing a region is a significant decision, so it's important to plan ahead. VPCs are limited to their regions and cannot span across them, meaning there’s no live transfer option. If you need to change regions later due to mistakes or shifts in plans, the complexity of migration will largely depend on the services in use.

The process for migrating Droplets involves taking a snapshot, replicating it to the target region, and then rebuilding. While cross-region snapshot replication is free with DigitalOcean, it can be time-consuming and may lead to service interruptions if not executed properly.

Although Droplets can be transferred via snapshots and managed databases can be moved, many other services, such as Volumes, Load Balancers, and DOKS clusters, are region-locked or must be recreated in the new region. For detailed guidance on this process, refer to the DigitalOcean region migration documentation.

Designing Across Different Regions

If your design spans multiple datacenters, you will need to use private networking through VPC peering to connect the separate VPCs, allowing resources in each to communicate over private IP addresses. Cross-datacenter traffic incurs a minor per-GiB fee. This setup does not extend a VPC across regions but connects two region-specific VPCs into a private network.

A typical architecture involves deploying the application tier across two or more datacenters, utilizing a Global Load Balancer to distribute incoming traffic, and setting up a managed database with a read-only node in another region that continuously replicates from the primary one. The load balancer manages requests and can redirect traffic to a healthy region if one goes down. Promoting the read-only node to primary requires a manual step.

Assessing Availability: Practical Tools

There are various methods to check regional availability. One approach is to consult the regional availability matrix found in DigitalOcean's documentation. Alternatively, you can check programmatically using the doctl CLI.

doctl compute region list --format Slug,Name,Available

This command will display all regions along with their identifiers and whether they are currently open for new resources.

You can also verify product availability by datacenter.

doctl apps list-regions

The above snippet pertains to the App Platform, while the following one relates to databases.

Lastly, for Kubernetes.

If you're developing automation or infrastructure-as-code solutions, the /v2/regions API endpoint provides the same data in JSON format. The control panel's region selector offers a quick filter, hiding or disabling options that are incompatible with your setup.

DigitalOcean's infrastructure is evolving rapidly, especially with the expansion of AI and GPU capabilities. Thus, any hard-coded list you create will likely become outdated, including the tables in this guide. The availability matrix and live outputs from doctl or the API are more reliable than any static list. Always confirm the region before finalizing your design.

DigitalOcean's regional availability is continuously evolving. The new AI-first infrastructure makes high-performance GPUs accessible to a variety of teams. The extensive core product coverage, complimentary cross-region snapshot replication, strong data-residency commitments, and swift AI/GPU expansion are significant advantages DigitalOcean provides. By carefully choosing your region from the start and considering proximity, availability, legal aspects, and costs, you can leverage these strengths as DigitalOcean's footprint grows.
