When working from home, your work laptop may be sharing a network with your personal devices, potentially giving your employer's IT department unnecessary access to your local network. To prevent this, setting up a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) can help.

Your work laptop shouldn't share a LAN with your personal devices

A VLAN allows one physical home network to behave like multiple separate networks, with each network having its own IP address range. This way, traffic between networks needs to pass through the router, where it can be controlled and blocked if necessary.

A company-controlled computer belongs in a separate trust zone

Since your work laptop is controlled by your employer's IT department, it's essential to keep it separate from your personal devices to prevent any potential security risks or unauthorized access to your local network.

Create one work VLAN and connect the laptop to it

To set up a VLAN, you'll need a router that supports multiple networks and traffic control between them. Create a new virtual network, assign it an unused VLAN ID and IP address range, and enable DHCP.

sudo vlan add 20

Create a separate Wi-Fi name and assign it to the VLAN, then connect your work laptop to this new network. For a wired laptop, assign its managed switch port to the work VLAN.

Block the work VLAN from every private network

To ensure the work VLAN is isolated from your other networks, look for Network Isolation or Block Inter-VLAN Traffic settings in your router and enable them for the work VLAN. If your router requires manual rule creation, block traffic from the work VLAN to your home, IoT, and other private subnets.

sudo ufw deny from 192.168.20.0/24 to 192.168.1.0/24

Test the isolation first

After setting up the VLAN, test that your work laptop can still access the internet and that it's isolated from your private network by trying to reach your router's admin page or another device on your network.

Technology teams are watching secure home network closely because changes in this space often arrive faster than internal policies can adapt.

For product and engineering leaders, the practical question is how this could reshape roadmaps, vendor choices, and security reviews over the next few quarters.

Organizations that document lessons early tend to respond more calmly when similar patterns appear again.

In many companies, the first impact shows up in planning meetings: teams reassess priorities, revisit risk registers, and check whether existing tooling still fits.

Smaller businesses feel these shifts too. A single platform change or market move can affect customer trust, delivery timelines, and hiring plans.

The most resilient teams treat stories like this as input for quarterly reviews rather than one-day headlines.

If your business depends on modern software, ERP, VoIP, or customer-facing apps, staying informed helps you separate noise from decisions that require action.

Looking ahead, disciplined follow-through matters: assign owners, set review dates, and measure whether your response improved outcomes.

Security and compliance stakeholders should ask whether current controls still match the pace of change described in this update.

Operations leaders can reduce friction by translating the headline into a short internal brief with clear next steps for each department.

Customer support teams may see early signals through tickets, outages, or policy questions long before leadership reviews are scheduled.

Finance and procurement groups should note whether licensing, vendor risk, or implementation costs need revisiting after this development.

Training programs benefit from timely updates so staff understand what changed, what did not change, and what requires escalation.

Architecture reviews are a practical place to test assumptions, especially when new tools, platforms, or threats enter the conversation.

Documentation quality often determines how quickly a company recovers from surprises; capture decisions while context is still clear.

By following these steps, you can ensure your work laptop is secure and isolated from your personal devices, protecting both your home network and your employer's network from any potential security risks.
