A recent global campaign has been targeting hospitality Wi-Fi networks, with the goal of breaching Microsoft 365 accounts. This campaign, dubbed CaptiveCrunch, has been linked to Russian threat actors and has been active since at least early May. The attackers use custom malware to manipulate DNS and HTTP traffic on networks, allowing them to intercept user connections to hotel and conference center Wi-Fi networks.

The Attack Method

The attackers manipulate DNS settings on Wi-Fi devices, which enables them to redirect victims to phishing pages that impersonate Microsoft 365 login portals. They can also use device code phishing pages that abuse Microsoft authentication flows. Additionally, the attackers use fake browser and operating system update pages to deliver malware to Windows devices.

Malware Families

The campaign uses two malware families, called CornFlake and ChocoShell, which have capabilities for persistent access, credential theft, surveillance, and data exfiltration. These malware families are designed to provide the attackers with long-term access to compromised devices and networks.

Targeted Devices

The attackers are targeting both Windows and Android devices. They use ClickFix prompts to deliver malware to Windows devices, and they also target Android devices to deliver an APK file.
