A recent security breach has been linked to a malvertising campaign on the Bing search engine, which is promoting a counterfeit Claude desktop app. This malicious operation is reportedly designed to deliver SectopRAT malware, putting several organizations at risk.
The Fake Claude App Scheme
Between July 21 and 22, at least 29 organizations were compromised due to this attack, which researchers have named FakeAgent. The attackers have cleverly utilized a malicious Claude Artifact that is hosted on the legitimate Claude.ai domain, a tactic that has been employed earlier this year to spread macOS malware.
How the Malware Works
The malicious Claude Artifact was found to have been downloaded over 7,100 times before it was taken down by Anthropic. Users who downloaded this artifact were redirected to a site offering a fake installer named ClaudeDesktop. However, this file is actually a legitimate component from JetBrains Chromium.
Once installed, it sideloads a malicious DLL file (libcef.dll) which delivers the SectopRAT remote access trojan. This trojan is capable of stealing sensitive information from the infected system.
Establishing Persistence
The malware establishes persistence on the system through an executable called DockerDesktop.exe, which sets up a scheduled task to ensure continued access. This persistence mechanism allows the attackers to maintain control over the infected machines.
Anti-Analysis Techniques
Researchers from Huntress have noted that the various loaders and components involved in the infection chain employ sophisticated anti-analysis techniques. These include VMProtect packing, shader timing checks, GPU and VRAM checks, as well as virtual machine detection to evade security measures.
