A sophisticated cyber threat actor has been exploiting the update mechanism of a popular private networking product suite to target organizations in Russia, including government agencies. This campaign, dubbed HelloNet, has been active since at least May and involves deploying a malicious payload that acts as a proxy and loader for additional malware.

The HelloNet Campaign

The HelloNet campaign has impacted various sectors, including government, energy, transport, education, and logistics. The attackers are abusing the update mechanism of the ViPNet software, which is widely used in Russia for its VPN, endpoint, and network access protection capabilities.

ViPNet Software

ViPNet is a family of Russian information-security products that provide a range of security features, including firewall, certificate management, and secure messaging and file transfer. Due to its popularity in Russia, especially among high-value organizations, it has been a frequent target for hackers.

Malicious Payload

The malicious payload, dubbed HelloInjector, is a DLL file that is sideloaded at system startup via a legitimate process. This DLL injects into a system process, granting elevated privileges on Windows and persistence across reboots. The payload then contacts a command-and-control server to receive additional modules.

Attack Vector

The exact method used by the attackers to gain initial access to the targeted systems is not known. However, it is clear that the attackers were able to place a malicious file inside the local ViPNet Update System directory.
