Building a podcast server can be an exciting project, and using a Raspberry Pi is a great way to do it. The Raspberry Pi is a perfect option for a podcast server because it uses very little power and can run 24/7 without breaking the bank.

Why Choose Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a low-power, low-cost device that is ideal for running a podcast server. It doesn't require a powerful CPU, and it can handle the task of downloading podcasts with ease. Additionally, the Raspberry Pi can be run headless, meaning it can be controlled remotely without the need for a monitor or keyboard.

Setting Up the Podcast Server

To set up the podcast server, I used a Raspberry Pi with an external USB hard drive for storing the downloaded podcasts. I installed Raspberry Pi OS Lite on the Pi and mounted the USB drive, creating folders for the podcasts and the server software.

I then installed Docker on the Pi and used a Docker Compose file to deploy the Audiobookshelf server software. Audiobookshelf is a self-hosted podcast manager that allows you to automatically download and manage your podcasts.

Once Audiobookshelf was up and running, I was able to access the web interface and configure the settings. I added my favorite podcasts by providing the RSS feed URL or searching for the podcast title.

For each podcast, I was able to customize the settings to my liking, including the schedule settings. I could choose how often Audiobookshelf would check for new episodes, the number of episodes to download per check, and how many episodes to keep in total.

Automating Podcast Downloads

With Audiobookshelf configured, my Raspberry Pi podcast server was able to automatically download the latest episodes of my favorite podcasts. The server would check for new episodes at the scheduled interval and download the specified number of episodes.
